Pediatrics

There are many skin conditions which affect children including eczema, warts, moles, acne, and fungal infections (ringworm of the skin or scalp). Many more rare skin diseases also occur ranging from types of hair loss to unusual rashes or growths on the skin.

Should I take my child to a dermatologist for all skin-related problems?

Pediatricians and family practitioners can effectively diagnose and treat a variety of skin disorders. When a child has a chronic skin disorder, such as moderate to severe eczema or psoriasis, or any problem which is not responding well to treatment or is difficult to diagnose, the the primary care doctor will often recommend a visit to the dermatologist. A child with an unusual growth or mole would also benefit from a dermatologic exam.

How can Cary Dermatology Center help my child?

Dermatologists are the experts in diagnosing and treating the full range of childhood skin conditions from infancy through the teenage years. We understand that chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne can greatly contribute to how children feel about themselves. After thoroughly evaluating your child's skin and determining a diagnosis, we will provide both education and appropriate treatment for your child's skin condition.

How should I care for my childs sensitive skin?

Until children reach puberty their skin does not produce much oil and tends to be more prone to dryness and irritation. To minimize dryness, wash with a soapless cleanser such as Cetaphil®, Aquanil®, or Oilatum®. Use lukewarm water to bathe, pat dry, and apply a fragrance-free moisturizer within 5 minutes of leaving the bath or shower to retain moisture in the skin. Avoid any fragrance-containing products because they may irritate the skin or cause itching. Launder clothes, towels, and bedding with fragrance-free, dye-free fabric detergent and fabric softener.
