Tinea versicolor

What's this rash that shows up more in the summer every year?

If you notice flat, white, salmon or light brown colored patches on your trunk, neck and even extremities, you may have a rash caused by a yeast like fungus called tinea versicolor.  Tinea versicolor usually is present on sweaty areas of the body.  It can itch, but often is asymptomatic.  Different skin tones manifest the rash differently, but a dermatologist can perform a simple in office test to prove that the fungus is present.

Tinea  versicolor often is less prominent in the winter months.  It is more common is those who exercise and sweat, and shows up more when the skin has been exposed to the sun.  

Treatments include prescription shampoos and anti fungal lotions.  In severe cases oral medications can be prescribed.  Since the fungus is present everywhere, recurrence is common.  Once controlled with prescription medication, using  an over the counter shampoo containing selenium sulfide as a body wash can prevent it from coming  back too quickly.
