How can I minimize fine lines and even out my skin tone?

There are many products available to rejuvenate the skin. The most effective products can be divided into 3 categories: retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids, and antioxidants (vitamin C).

Retinoids such as tretinoin and tazarontene are the most effective products available to decrease fine lines and correct uneven skin tones. These are prescription products available in several formulations. Many over-the-counter products contain a form of vitamin A known as retinol or retinyl palmitate. These products are not as effective as tretinoin and tazarontene, but may be useful for people who cannot tolerate the dryness and irritation sometimes experienced with prescription products.

Alpha-hydroxy acids are the most effective skin rejuvenating acids available. The two most common forms of alpha-hydroxy acids are glycolic acid and lactic acid. These products exfoliate the skin, reduce fine lines, and even out skin color. Over-the counter products contain relatively low amounts of these acids. Cary Dermatology offers glycolic and polyglycolic acid products from the MD Forte® and Neostrata® skin care lines. These products contain much higher and more stable glycolic acid levels than over the counter products.

Antioxidants reduce damanging free radicals in the skin and may provide additinal photo protection beyond regular sun screen use. Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant widely used in topical prepartations. The only form of vitamin C which can be absorbed into the skin and provide this protective effect is L-ascorbic acid. Our SkinCeuticals products contain L-ascorbic acid in the highest concentrations available. Many over-the-counter products contain vitamin C, but typically in a form that is not as effective in the skin. The combination of Vitamin E with Vitamin C can provide even more potent antioxidant benefits.

Other unique antioxidants such as silymarin, ferulic acid, and Idebenone (Prevage®) work through different pathways to provide additional protection from the environmental stresses known to cause skin aging.

What daily sunscreen do you recommend?

The most important means of preventing sun damage is to wear sunscreen every day of the year. There are many daily moisturizers with effective sunscreen protection. We recommend SPF 30 sunscreen with broand spectrum UVB and UVA coverage. We continually revise our specific sunscreen recommendations as new formulations are introduced and are demonstrated to be effective.

What should I use to wash my face?

The choice of daily cleanser depends on the oiliness of your face. People with sensitive or dry skin should use a soapless cleanser such as Cetaphil®, Aquanil®, or Oilatum®. If you prefer a cleanser that gently exfoliates, try MD Forte cleanser or Aqua Glycolic® cleanser. For oily or acne-prone skin Neutrogena® Acne Wash with salicylic acid or MD Forte Glycare cleansing gel may prove effective. Whichever cleanser you use, avoid over washing your face, and discontinue a cleanser if it causes dryness.
