What is a dermal filler?
Dermal fillers replace volume that is naturally lost as we age. Commons areas for volume loss of the face include the smile lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth, the the frown lines between the corners of the mouth and the chin, under the eyes, the cheeks, the jaw line, and the lips. The most common dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (Juverderm) and collagen (Cosmoderm). Newer fillers such as Radiesse stimulate the body to make new collagen. Radiesse is made of calcium and phosphorus.
How do dermal fillers work?
The hyaluronic acid and collagen fillers are placed in the dermis or middle layer of the skin to provide immediate volume restoration. The filler gradually degrades over time. Collagen lasts about 3 months while hyaluronic acid lasts 4-9 months. Radiesse is placed in the lower part of the dermis where it stimulates the body to produce collagen. Radiesse degrades over several months while the new collagen maintains the correction for 9-15 months
Are dermal fillers safe?
Yes. At Cary Dermatology we offer a range of safe and effective FDA approved fillers including Juvederm, Cosmoplast and Radiesse. All of these fillers are fully biocompatible.
How are dermal fillers administered?
Dermal fillers are administered by injection into the site where enhancement is desired. The area is first anesthetized with a topical numbing cream or a local numbing solution.
What should patients do prior to treatment?
Patients should avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, coumadin, other prescription blood thinners, Saint Johns Wort, and high does of vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo biloba and garlic for a period of 10 days before administration of a dermal filler to minimize the risk of bleeding and bruising. Anyone with a history of facial cold sores should be treated preventatively on the day of filler administration. There are some people who should not be treated with fillers such as those with multiple severe allergies involving the skin, individuals with collagen vascular disorders such as systemic lupus, and people who form keloid scars.
What can be expected after treatment?
Mild swelling and redness typicall lasts for two to three days but may last longer. Some fillers cause more swelling or bruising than others. Your treatment will be tailored to your needs and you will be advised of what to expect. Make-up may be applied to the treatment area 1 hour after treatment.
