Q: I've had Botox, and have heard more and more about Dysport. How do these products compare?

A: Botox and Dysport are both safely extracted types of botulinum toxin type A, used cosmetically for the same goal of lessening lines and wrinkles of expression. The effect of both products is very similar and their core component is the same, but comparing amounts/units differ due to the individual accessory proteins used in their formulas. For this reason, Dysport is not a preferred cosmetic injectable for patients with cows milk allergies; in this situation, Botox would be the only option. Otherwise, both Botox and Dysport are often used interchangeably as injectables for fine lines and wrinkles in areas of expression. The goal of the treatment is a softening of the lines and reduction in their presence at baseline. With regular upkeep (every 3-4 months), patients notice considerable improvement in problem areas. As with any medical procedure or medication, it is best to discuss your options with your medical provider. Together, you can pick the best option for your aesthetic needs.
